Our Mission

The Scholarships awarded by the Virginia Carolinas Scholarship Foundation Trust are given to students who have a record of demonstrated leadership, including, but not limited to, serving as an officer of a student organization or captain of an athletic team and a commitment to pursuing active leadership roles.

All recipients of the Scholarship must be originally from either Virginia, North Carolina or South Carolina. The first four scholarships in any given year must go to students that are enrolled in the Engineering School at Virginia Tech. Additional Scholarships, if awarded, may go to engineering students at other accredited Colleges and Universities in the United States.

Colonel Harmon Broyles, the founder of the Scholarship Foundation, was a U. S. Army veteran of WWII. Col Broyles felt that there were numerous scholarships already available to students based on academic achievement and/or financial need. However, he strongly felt the desire to create a scholarship based on the Leadership Characteristics that are a critical part of our Nation's Military. True Leaders rise above the challenges that they face and this has been one of the cornerstones that has made our country great. Additionally, true leaders can come from all walks of life and he wanted this scholarship to recognize those students regardless of their financial needs or academic background.

Col Broyles was born in Virginia and was a 1927 graduate of Virginia Polytechnical Institute (VPI) which is now known as Virginia Tech. He graduated with a engineering degree. Following his military service, he served as an engineering professor at Clemson University.
